On January 5, 2000, I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. It affects your organs, arteries, eyesight, and hearing. I remember I called my dad crying. I had seen my mom, relatives, and friends all experience complications that were irreversible which resulted in them becoming disabled, or even passing away.

My story with Diabetes is on-going because I have, finally, gotten my sugar levels under control after retiring early to focus on my health. I resigned in 2013 and it has taken me 5 years of exercise, yoga, eating more vegetables and fruits and eating less bread, fast food, canned foods and frozen foods. I also began drinking a lot of water and taking diabetic vitamins.

Last summer, I had an incident while at the gym. I was having a hard time getting up after stumbling over the treadmill. I had no control of my body and the words were not coming out to the point that even my son couldn’t understand me. I ended up passing out. When I came to, the ambulance was helping me up so that we could go to the ER. I was scared because my sugar levels were at 39. Thank God I didn’t go into a coma or damage my organs.

I began a slow recovery of balancing my sugars. From the time I wake up until the time I go to sleep, I am taking care of myself 24/7. I thank God for giving me the hope to continue working on my new job: taking care of myself.
