As a child, I grew up having to live it rough. My dad had issues with drug and alcohol abuse. He’d always yell at my mom and hit her. I experienced verbal abuse while growing up.

MY NAME IS CAT AND THIS IS MY STORY.

Ever since I was little, I never had a good memory of my dad, only the bad ones. He was either never home or in jail. He’d always let me know how worthless I was and that hit hard, especially as a child since I never even knew what was going on.

One day he shot a man and that was the day that ultimately led towards my happiness because he got arrested. I even remember the night that the cops busted in our front door looking for the gun. I was lost and confused because I didn’t know that my dad had done this.

I remember the cop shining the light into my bedroom telling us to step into the living room. When I got there, my mom was in handcuffs on the couch crying. They were ready to take her to jail despite her being just as clueless as I was. However, the man my dad had shot pleaded his for years to not be as long.

He ended up serving only 4 years. After that, I was no longer free from being scared.

Later on, when I was in 4th grade, my mom ended up dating the guy my father shot. I was happy for her. He took me on all of my first vacations and he even taught me how to drive. They’ve been together for 5 years now and I’m happier than ever.

I have everything that I need and I’m no longer worrying. Yes, my past was rough and it puts a lot on my future self, but I try to work through my former hard times. God gave me this life because he knew I could live it.
