When I was in 8th Grade and my younger sister was in 6th we had truly learned to appreciate what we have! We typically ran out of food halfway through the month. The two of us were living hand to mouth with our mentally ill mother. One day, when we came home from school we discovered that we were absolutely out of food and had water, curry powder and soy sauce in our refrigerator.

A few years back a couple who were work friends of our father’s had gifted us with 2 stuffed animal frogs. They were made out of faux velvet with one being avocado green and one being a dull goldish color. I kid you not, my sister and I went to examine the frogs at the same time! We were simultaneously wondering what the hell the frogs were stuffed with! We both decided to go ahead and sacrifice the gold one first!

My sister carefully started ripping the frog open. To our absolute pleasure, we found that the frogs had been stuffed with rice! We used the gold frog’s rice and boiled that rice for dinner that night and did the same with the green frog the next day. I don’t remember what we did when the rice was gone but we obviously survived! There are more stories where this came from!
