My son is 20 and recently diagnosed with schizophrenia in October 2017.

We have had a long history of behavior issues but we never could get a diagnosis that made sense. He self-medicated for years and this is likely that he masked the very real, very scary paranoia that he battled with.

He finally stopped self-medicating in July 2017 which is when we were finally able to understand what was happening with him. We all believed that once we just knew what was wrong, then we can finally just get help.

It wasn’t that easy and still isn’t. He refused and still disagrees that he has schizophrenia. It is difficult for all of us.

We are in the beginning of our journey and finally, after several major episodes I call them, he is finally willing to accept that maybe he needs some help to get him to a state of independence that he can build from.

He has messed up at every safe place he had to stay and now he is living in a hotel but the money will run out quickly. Some people I know just expect me to take him back to live here but his instability makes me feel unsafe in my own home.

Tomorrow we are trying to get him qualified for respite care. I had never heard of this before but it is assisted living for mental health patients. They help them get stable, teach them life skills, and try to help them get on a path to independence.

This is so important for my son and I hope it works. If you are where we were, look to see if there is respite care for mental illness in your area.

I really hope this is the path for him!!!!
