My husband and I are both 61. I am retired.

My husband has five more years before his retirement. His son came to live with us twenty-two months ago.

We knew from the very beginning that something was off. There was a lot of pacing and talking to someone that was not there. We tried talking and other forms of communication, to no avail.

We began to research schizophrenia. The more we researched, the more it sounded like we knew what we were up against. I was afraid of my stepson. His behavior was like nothing I had ever experienced before. We finally got him to a psychiatrist, who diagnosed him as paranoid schizophrenic.

This has been very difficult for his dad and me. We have used a lot of our retirement savings to get him the help he needs. We want to have our later years for ourselves. We have done what we can to make sure he is air able to make it on his own. We feel trapped at this point in time.

We love him and want him to be able to make it on his own.
