I got a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis a couple of months ago. I had a colonoscopy in February that showed mild colitis. I had diarrhea about two months before that. On Easter Sunday I was at brunch with my sons and sister and wasn’t able to stay out of the bathroom, much less eat. Later that week was seen by my Gastroenterologist and scheduled for a sigmoidoscopy and was then diagnosed with UC.
After the diagnosis my life changed completely. Initially saw some improvement from meds including prednisone but after the taper, the UC recurred with a vengeance. By August I was hospitalized with severe dehydration and malnutrition. I had a PIC line, and stayed eight days. Released on Prednisone and other meds and have started biweekly Humira. I responded quickly to the Humira and I’m still making progress. I found a good diet plan on Amazon that has been a life saver. It’s all slow. I’ve learned that. It’s all slow.
I’ve also learned there are so many helpful people out there and I’m was not the reach out type. I am now. I’d say the hardest thing for me to learn, and I still battle, is following the diet rules to the letter. Eat 6-7 small meals a day and yes, it does matter what you eat. Take time to do even a little self care. This thing is hard, but doable.
