How My Tourette’s Card Has Helped Me

Hi, my name is Emmaline and I was diagnosed with Tourette’s Syndrome this year but I’ve been experiencing symptoms since the age of 8. My Tourette’s syndrome is pretty severe and has caused a lot of social misunderstandings such as gaining a bad reputation for cussing, threatened to be called security on, and been threatened to call the cops on. My Tourette’s has prevented me from going to church, movie theaters, libraries, and it can prevent me from taking tests in classrooms with other kids.

I have recently purchased a Tourette’s emergency card from CureUp and would like to talk about it. Before I had the card, I remember wanting one so I didn’t have to explain myself to other people, it would all be on a card. Reason being that, I would constantly be at school or in public when people would notice my tics. They would then unknowingly get mad at me for them. That’s when I wished I had had a card most, so that they would fully understand it was a neurological condition and that I couldn’t control it.

After a few bad incidents in public and at school, resulting in tears and confusion, I started thinking of ways to make life with strangers easier. I thought of a lanyard with an explanation in it! I began planning to make a lanyard with medical cards in it. I honestly looked everywhere and couldn’t find one that clearly stated I had a medical condition, and couldn’t control what I did or said. That’s when I found CureUp.

When I found their Tourette’s card, I immediately bought it. I have had it for around 2 months now, and I love it! Any time a stranger or teacher comments on one of my tics, I show them my Tourette’s medical ID and they finally understand it’s a neurological condition. I had a teacher get mad at me once for a swearing tic due to coprolalia, and once I showed her the card from CureUp, she apologized and left me alone.

Another way it has helped is that during bad tic attacks when I can’t speak, people will see my card and won’t call an ambulance that costs 100s of dollars. I am now able to go into places such as movie theaters and libraries without people kicking me out for acting socially inappropriate, because they now understand it’s a disability.

My struggle with Tourette’s has always been a challenge, but this card has made it so much easier! It’s also affordable and of good quality, making it easy for people who don’t have as much money to still get some medical aid in their life. The fact that it’s made of bendable plastic makes it less breakable and more legit feeling. It provides resources, explanations, and shows a clear medical notice at the top. I would recommend this product to everyone with Tourette’s syndrome because it helps with your everyday life around strangers and with doctors. CureUp has definitely changed my life for the better.
