After becoming more aware of my BPD and finding pages with memes to relate to the disorder, I realized I was not the only one with an FP, Favorite Person.

Some people have favorite people rather than just one person but I knew right away the FP in my life is my spouse. He is the one who can “make or break” me. His opinion matters to me more than anyone else’s, sometimes, even more than my own. I hate the way it feels to make or see him unhappy in any way. I would do almost anything to avoid upsetting him. More than that, everything just seems better when he’s around and vice versa, I don’t know what to do with myself when he’s gone. Even food tastes better when I eat it with him.

I think of him as the person I can be myself around, and am the most comfortable with. He is my support system. However, he is also the person I am most likely to “split” on. Which means, if something is even slightly different one day in the way he responds or acts towards me, I can connect this in my head to him being unhappy or wanting to leave.

So, I immediately become defensive and begin preparing myself for this perceived abandonment. I come up with the reason for why things (or myself, or him) have never and will never be good enough. I realize it seems unhealthy to put to all your eggs into one basket or in this case, one person.

I understand that “normal” people find validation by maintaining a myriad of relationships but to me, all other people besides my FP feel like strangers who I can only tolerate for a limited amount of time.
